The past few months have been wonderful, full of busyness, family functions and gigantic life changes. I've decided to focus on my writing - really focus - and will be leaving for Portugal on June 19th for the two week long Disquiet: Dzanc Books International Literary Program. I'll be accompanied by my husband, who won't be taking the course but instead, will soak up the rich Lisbon culture/beauty. Also coming along, my amazingly supportive writer friend, Andrea Grassi. (Gunhouse, so stoked for this trip, man).
My good friend and teacher, Jeff Parker, from my UofT Creative Writing class is running the program and suggested we go - with the years I've had I couldn't think of a reason not to. Plus, no better way to kick my ass into gear than two weeks full of:
- Workshops in Poetry, Fiction, and Nonfiction
- A Literary and Cultural program featuring contemporary Portuguese writers, lecturers, and thinkers
- Literary walks, film screenings, and excursions
- Faculty and guests including three Pulitzer Prize winners
- Some of the most compelling and interesting writers working today, selected primarily on the basis of their strong reputations as teachers of writing and the arts
So I'm quite looking forward to it, despite the copious amounts of editing I have to do before I leave next week. Roughly 350 pages of other students work. Not sure when, or how I will get this done, but I know it'll happen, somehow! Very much looking forward to it all.
Today I'm headed to the World Conference on Breast Cancer in Hamilton. They'll be screening our doc, I Don't Have Time For This, and asked us to be on the discussion panel to talk about our experience. It's the first time we'll all be together since the loss of both Crystal and Clare, so we're guessing it'll be an extremely emotional day.
The only other thing I've been focusing on is my health - Paleo and Crossfit have been amazing, but that is a post on it's own that requires far more mental power than I can use right now. Stay tuned.
And while I'm at it, lastly, Mil and I have some extreme Two Shaking to do! Check out our site www.twoshakes.ca and follow us on Twitter @twoshakesdotca.

Cla,
Nice to read you again!
As someone who has needed "focus time" for the past 6 months to complete some important writing of my own (boring academic doctoral work that is not as life changing or important as yours of course...), I STRONGLY support taking time OFF to focus ONLY on your writing.
Half time focus produces half time results, so you go girl! I can't wait to read your first draft :)
May the writing muse blow in your general direction for the rest of June!
Enjoy!
Tania
Way to actually be a person who puts a plan into action. It's going to pay off. GUARANTEED. xo
